"I knew I was in good hands."

Thursday, April 26, 2012

I never dreamed that I might not be around to be a Mum to our new daughter. Thanks to Wellington Free Ambulance that nightmare never came true.

It was four days after the birth of our first child. I woke after a short nap in excruciating pain. My back was in spasms, a wave of numbness grew up the left side of my body, my head ached and my chest was tight. The decision was made to call an ambulance.

Through my aches and panic the only thing I could think about was the prospect of this wonderful life of being a brand new Mum dissolving away in front of me. I didn’t know it at the time but I had developed post-partum high blood pressure and I since understand that I was experiencing some of the symptoms of stroke. I now also know that minutes save lives when it comes to stroke victim’s survival rates.

When the paramedics arrived they were so reassuring and calming. I knew I was in good hands. I don’t know if my life was saved by Wellington Free ambulance but I do know that it is one ‘what if’ that doesn’t bare thinking about.
