Keeping the region safe this Anniversary Weekend

Wellington Anniversary Weekend is going to be a good one this year, with lots of events happening around our region.

Wellington Free Ambulance event medics will be out and about to keep you safe while you enjoy yourself.

One event medic is Emma Murphy, who is volunteering at the NZ Cycle Classic in the Wairarapa.

“The five-day cycle series in the Wairarapa is an international event, there are various races throughout the Wairarapa, with around 100 people cycling.

“As an event medic, I oversee the medical care for the cyclists, and follow their route. I respond to and treat any injuries and provide transport for them if needed.

“The event is held on the Wairarapa’s main roads, so we are there to provide on-road support and medical equipment. The cyclists know they are in safe hands and can enjoy the ride without any worries.”

Emma says that because Wellington Anniversary events are public, it is important to be aware of your surroundings.

“It’s about being safe on the roads and following the road rules. Keep an eye out for other people, as Wellington will be a hive of activity this weekend.

“Make sure you are dressed appropriately, Wellington has seen some very hot weather recently, so it is important to wear your sunscreen and keep hydrated.”

Other great events this Anniversary Weekend include the Black Caps playing at the Basin Reserve on Friday and at the Westpac Stadium on Monday; go-karting and Speedway Saturday in Upper Hutt on Saturday night, and the Glastonbury Festival in Wairarapa.

“As event medics, we are here to keep you safe. Come and say hello and we will be happy to help.”
