Six months with Nick Ridley

Six months with Nick Ridley

As Nick Ridley marks the half way point of his graduate year with Wellington Free Ambulance, he moves from under the wing of his mentor Isaac on Green Shift to Red Shift with new mentor Aaron.

Nick says that working under Isaac’s guidance has been a real highlight “his incredible support and constant encouragement to be a better clinician has kept me on my toes and I couldn’t have imagined a better start to my career.”

Whilst joining the team as a new graduate is a big challenge for Nick, learning the ropes and taking responsibility for a new graduate is also a big deal for Isaac.

Isaac has been working with Wellington Free Ambulance for almost six years, mentoring graduates for the past 18 months.

“The biggest motivation for me to become a mentor was the opportunity to use the best and worst experiences I’ve had to help the development of others” he says.

As he works with new graduates who are fresh out of their studies and full of knowledge and enthusiasm, Isaac says “it’s a great chance for them to have some one on one mentoring and apply what they’ve learnt.”

Being able to use his own front line clinical experiences to teach graduates things they might not learn in the classroom is what makes Isaac ‘incredibly proud’ to be a mentor.

When asked about his time with Nick, Isaac says it’s been great because they get along so well. “We met up before we started working together to go over our expectations of each other’s role and came up with a plan about how things were going to work together.”

“Nick is really self-motivated and has taken well to our many ‘whiteboard sessions’”.

When asked about his highlights, Isaac says it has to be the time Nick illustrated his self-defence capabilities using a tray of Panadol, “no degree will ever teach you that” he laughs.

Whilst Nick and Isaac get along brilliantly, all great things must come to an end eventually. They’ll always be Wellington Free colleagues, but as we continue to follow Nick on his new ventures on Red Shift, it’s time for Isaac to take a little break from mentoring as he focuses on his new role as husband and soon to be father.
