One One One Book

Following 18 months on the road with our crews, our incredible friend and photographer, Adrian Heke, captured those beautiful human moments between staff and patients.

A snapshot in time.
No positioning or altering.
Just real.

3 December 2018

What an inspired idea.

Adrian Heke approached us in 2016 with an unexpected offer to create a photo documentary. There were lots of questions about patient privacy, the logistics of having Adrian and his camera gear in the back of the ambulance, and the chance of him ending up somewhere unexpected at the end of a long night shift.

Of course, when you head out on the road with one of our crew you never know what you are going to get. Adrian will tell you there were days and nights with longs stretches of ‘ordinary’, followed by shifts where he found himself rushed from one dramatic scene to the next. But with warm acceptance from staff, and sensitivity from Adrian, he managed to capture those heartfelt connections between staff and patients. Kindness and care can be seen in a look, a gesture or a smile. Sometimes it is the look of concentration that gives away the intensity of a situation.

Through those beautiful human moments Adrian’s striking photography, we have created the One One One photography book, illustrating a small insight into the work at Wellington Free Ambulance.

The book is available to purchase for $40 from Vic Books Pipitea. Just pop into store at 27 Lambton Quay, right by the train station, or alternatively you can get your copy directly through us. Just drop us an email

Adrian donated his time and passion to this project and all proceeds from the sale of books come directly to Wellington Free Ambulance.

Adrian is a good friend and an incredible photographer.

Thank you to Adrian for this beautiful gift.
