Celebrating excellence: Leading by example

Wellington Free Ambulance Team Manager of Communications (TMC), Robbie recently won the Lead by Example award at our annual staff awards evening and says it was a humbling experience and very unexpected.

The night celebrates and recognises the outstanding work of staff over the past year.

“It was nice to win and be recognised by my team and the wider organisation,”says Robbie.

“I’m brand new to the TMC role – six months in and it’s great to have been recognised in this way; obviously the hard work has paid off.”

Reflecting on what leading by example means to him, Robbie says it’s important to do, say and act as he would expect anyone else in the team to.

“It’s also about asking how an action will affect myself, the team and our patients and it’s about ticking those boxes.

“It’s very important that we are trusted by our patients, our community and our stakeholders; that they trust we know what we are doing.”

Starting as a dispatcher five years ago, then a relief team manager, Robbie worked his way up to the TMC role.

“You move away from your core skills of dispatching and call taking to people management which is completely different. There’s a lot of on the job learning,” says Robbie.

Having been a call taker and dispatcher means Robbie can answer questions that call takers and dispatchers have and the TMC role has been a natural progression.

“We put a big emphasis on team work here. You see your team more than you see your family sometimes,” says Robbie.

Nick, his relief team manager, won the supreme award Employee of the Year, “it’s great, he’s employee of the year and I’m lead by example, so that works well,” says Robbie.

A highlight of his role is that everyday is different. “You are always thinking on your feet, this means Nick and I sometimes need to make decisions outside of the norm.

“We make exceptions to some rules about what’s ok and what isn’t to make sure the patient is always our number one priority.”

“There are always situations where you have to start thinking outside the box, it may be how you find someone or how you can best help someone,” says Robbie.

Feedback from one of his nominees said Robbie embodies what leading by example stands for; learning new things and never being afraid to try.

“He encourages not only his team but others around him to do their best and to always give it a go.”

Robbie says he’s tackled the TMC role head on and has made it his own. “I try to encourage everyone to do their best and be their best.”

His day-to-day outlook is simple: “You don’t know until you try; you should always give something a go, whether it is in your work or personal life.”
