Look after yourself and your whānau

As we settle into a beautiful autumn the temperate starts to drop a little, so we're looking at how best to keep you safe and help you prepare for the potential of winter illnesses. It’s so important to look after yourself and your whānau, keeping healthy to avoid viruses like COVID-19 and flu.

Paramedics

Keeping well doesn’t have to be hard and often it’s the simple things that really do us well.

One of the best forms of protection against viruses such as COVID-19 and flu is to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly. Try to avoid regularly touching your face and make sure when you cough or sneeze you do it into your elbow or into a tissue.

Speak to your GP about getting the flu vaccine, it’s your best protection from the flu virus. It does not necessarily prevent the flu but it helps to reduce the amount of flu virus in your area and reduces the severity of the symptoms.  Visit www.influenza.org.nz for more information.

Stay warm, try to keep your house dry and well ventilated and wrap up when you go outside.

If you can, minimise interactions with those who are sick, and if you’re feeling under the weather keep away from others. Staying home and resting will help reduce the spread of illness among others, particularly those who are more vulnerable to infection.

Other things you can do to help you and others:

  • Eat a balanced diet with a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruit every day, especially those high in vitamin C such as citrus fruits.
  • Drink plenty of water, particularly if you’re out walking or exercising. It doesn’t have to be a sunny day to become dehydrated.
  • A good night’s sleep help support a healthy immune system.
  • Keep active with moderate exercise every day by walking, running or doing a home workout – just remember to maintain a physical distance of two metres when outside your bubble.

If you feel unwell seek medical care early, don’t leave it until you feel really sick. GPs are offering consultations over the phone and pharmacies are still open. If you experience flu like symptoms it’s important to get these assessed, even if you haven’t had any contact with other sick people.

If you think it’s an emergency and you need our help, don’t be worried about calling 111. We’ll work with you to ensure the best care, in the best way, and will take every precaution to ensure to you stay safe from viruses such as COVID-19 and flu.

We will continue to be here for you when you need us most and will do everything we can to support you over the coming months.

Care and compassion are fundamental to how we work, and this will always continue.

Stay safe Wellington and Wairarapa.
