Locum Opportunity – Senior Doctor (Enhanced Virtual Care Service)
Help shape the future of emergency care with Wellington Free Ambulance. As part of our strategy Kia ora te Tangata 2030, Wellington Free Ambulance (WFA) is expanding its Enhanced Virtual Care initiative — and we’re looking for Locum Senior Doctors to support this service.
About the Enhanced Virtual Care Initiative
Launched in March, this service is already delivering strong results. We do this by:
- Expanding secondary triage to offer more tailored care options like dispatching extended care paramedics.
- Safely managing suitable patients in the community with the support of senior medical expertise.
We are now entering an exciting new phase, and your expertise can make all the difference.
As a Locum Senior Doctor, you will:
- Provide senior clinical support to the Clinical Communications Centre for the hours agreed
- Provide immediately available clinical support to Clinical Paramedic Advisors (CPAs) and teletriage clinicians regarding patients where management in the community may be appropriate, including but not limited to:
- Management and follow-up of patients in the community
- Investigation and management of urgent but non-emergency conditions
- Providing prescriptions, requesting laboratory testing and referring for basic imaging (X-Ray). Following up on these results
- Provide advice to paramedics regarding patients where management in the community and/or alternative pathways to ED may be appropriate. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Patients who would benefit from community management
- Patients who are suitable for investigation and GP follow up
- Patients who are likely to be admitted and have a clear receiving specialty (e.g. medicine, surgery, paediatrics)
- Patients who are palliative or in advanced care facilities
- Review the pending queue in conjunction with the lead CPA identify cases where they can provide benefit
- If required, liaise with paramedics around the management of jobs that the doctor has requested ambulance attendance
- Provide advice to ambulance crews around management of complex and/or high acuity cases
- Participate in audit of other clinicians’ cases
The following are not within the scope of this role:
- Direct influence on decision making around dispatch for road or air
- Physical deployment to cases.
This is a rare opportunity to directly influence how emergency care is delivered across the Greater Wellington and Wairarapa region. Be part of a future-focused team making meaningful change for patients and the wider health system in real time.
