Paramedic
Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics lead patient care in emergency medical and trauma situations, including pre-hospital care and treat-at-home care.
Our paramedic crews respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It’s their job to provide world class, compassionate care at over 55,000 incidents every year.
Graduate paramedic
Start your career making a real difference as a graduate paramedic with us.
In this role, you'll deliver high-quality patient care with professionalism, efficiency, and compassion, supported every step of the way. Our comprehensive training programme includes classroom learning, driver training, and dedicated on-road support from an experienced preceptor, ensuring you build the confidence and capability to provide clinical excellence in every situation.
You'll also benefit from strong career development pathways, with opportunities to progress and grow your career in paramedicine. To be eligible, you'll need a Bachelor of Health Science in Paramedicine (completed or by your start date, with eligibility for registration with Te Kaunihera Manapou Paramedic Council), along with a full, clean driver’s licence held for at least two years.
Experienced paramedic
As a paramedic you'll be required to provide the highest possible standard of patient care in a consistently efficient, effective and professional manner. This role provides leadership within their assigned authority to practice, ensuring that professionalism and clinical excellence are always modelled and maintained, in all situations and interactions.
In terms of experience, you'll need to be an operational paramedic in New Zealand or Australia, or who are currently working as a Band 6 paramedic in the UK. Experienced paramedics join our clinical workforce with support to transition into the Wellington Free environment.
There are a range of careers available at Wellington Free for paramedics, with opportunities to progress to intensive care paramedics, critical care paramedics, extended care paramedics and clinical paramedic advisors. There are also opportunities to join our specially trained Rescue Squad, the Pōneke Promise team or the co-response team.

All paramedics at Wellington Free are registered with Te Kaunihera Manapou Paramedic Council.
Communications centre
The 111 communications centre in Thorndon, Wellington is one of three in the country, with the other two being in Auckland and Christchurch. It’s staffed by a team of emergency medical call takers, ambulance dispatchers, clinical paramedic advisors, and nurses.
When someone calls 111, emergency medical call takers use an international triage system to determine the condition of the patient, and ambulance dispatchers organise the best sort of help. They’re backed by a team of clinical paramedic advisors and registered nurses who provide help and advice over the phone.
Emergency medical call taker (EMCT)
EMCTs are the reassuring voices at the end of your 111 call, talking to people in critical situations every single day (and night!). It’s an extremely challenging but rewarding role.
On completion of training, emergency medical call takers receive an International Diploma in Emergency Medical Dispatch.
Emergency medical dispatcher (EMD)
EMDs ensure that the appropriate resources are dispatched to both emergency and non-urgent incidents. They juggle multiple resources using multiple communications methods. It’s a technical role managing high volumes of incidents in often stressful situations.
Patient transfer officer (PTO)
Patient transfer officers transport patients on some of life’s most important journeys such as getting to essential treatment like dialysis or cancer treatments; moving between hospitals; transferring from hospice to home; and parents visiting their babies in hospital NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit).
Our Patient Transfer Service operates 17 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. PTOs are trained at a range of skill levels and can provide healthcare as needed. But the service goes beyond medical transport, with PTOs often building close bonds with their patients, especially the ones they see many times a week.
Event medic
Wellington Free’s event medics provide reassuring medical support at a range of events across Greater Wellington and Wairarapa. From concerts and festivals, and marathons to significant sport games, we’re on the sidelines ready to help.
Our event medics attend hundreds of events every year, as well as training the community in CPR and AED skills as part of The Lloyd Morrison Foundation Heartbeat programme. They receive ongoing training and support and can be involved as often as their time allows. Joining the event medic team is a great way to give back to your community while learning new skills if you don’t come from a medical background – plus, you’ll get a front row seat at some of our region’s biggest and best events!

While most staff are out in our communities every day and night, there’s a crew of people in the background supporting them.
Our head office team is involved in a huge range of activities, with specialists across medicine, administration, human resources, finance, communications, fundraising, IT and more.
