Justine's journey - 800km of love, loss, and legacy

This spring, Justine will lace up her boots and take her first step on an extraordinary journey walking 800 kilometres from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Her why is everything. Read on to find out more.

From 1 September to 10 October 2025, Wairarapa’s own Justine will walk the famed French route of the El Camino in memory of her beloved partner, Michael Haora. She’s taking on this special journey to raise funds for Wellington Free Ambulance – the only emergency ambulance service in the Greater Wellington and Wairarapa region that’s free for everyone, every time.

And she’s inviting all of us to walk alongside her in spirit by contributing to Wellington Free Ambulance – ensuring this vital service can continue to be here, free of charge for anyone in need.

A walk for love, loss and legacy

Justine’s motivation is deeply personal. In December 2023, her world changed forever when Michael passed away after a serious motorbike accident in Masterton. The severity of the incident required a multi-agency emergency response and Wellington Free Ambulance was on the scene within minutes. The paramedics worked tirelessly to care for Michael, staying with him through it all. The accident was so severe that, despite every effort, Michael couldn’t be saved. Amid the chaos and grief, one organisation stood out for their compassion and support.

“Only one stood out for its compassion, honesty and unwavering support – Wellington Free Ambulance,” Justine says.

“They treated me with kindness and empathy. With transparency and dignity. They provided me with the full story and didn’t leave me looking for answers that were impacting mine and our whānau’s wellbeing. That’s a gift I’ll never forget.”

Her El Camino Walk is both a tribute to Michael’s strength and mana, and a way to honour those who feel unseen in their grief after tragic, traumatic events.

“Every step I take is for him, for Wellington Free Ambulance, and for the next person who needs that same love and care.”

Why it matters

Every year, Wellington Free Ambulance must raise over $8.5 million to keep our service free of charge for the community. People like Justine who organise fundraisers are crucial to raising the funds required every year.  This walk isn’t just a physical challenge, it’s a heartfelt pilgrimage across mountains and valleys, villages and cities, undertaken with aroha, resilience, and purpose.

We’re so honoured Justine is walking in our name, and for the people we care for. Let’s support her every step of the way.

Please donate today to support Justine as she remembers her beloved Michael and help raise her ambitious target of $50,000 to help keep ambulance services free of charge.

From all of us at Wellington Free, thank you Justine for your courage, your generosity, and for reminding us how powerful love in action can be.
