Women in Ambulance Awards 2026

On March 6, we were proud to celebrate six wāhine who were recognised as Honour Recipients in the 2026 Council of Ambulance Authorities Women in Ambulance Awards. Read more about this year’s winners: Katie, Miranda, Rachel, Aksha, Wendy and Vanessa.

Katie, Emergency Planning Manager and Event Medic

Katie leads a small team which has a huge impact on Wellington Free Ambulance. She strives to ensure the organisation can be as prepared as it can be to maintain delivery of essential health services in the face of adverse events. Deeply passionate about increasing resilience across our teams and communities, Katie can often be found actively contributing to emergency exercises across the region while also being a valuable event medic who holds an Emergency Medical Technician Authority to Practice.

Miranda, Clinical Paramedic Advisor

An inspirational mentor and preceptor with a kind and warm demeanour, Miranda is widely recognised as a well-respected clinical paramedic advisor, and valued member of the Wellington Free Ambulance team. She’s currently responsible for managing the preceptor training programme at Wellington Free, where she’s demonstrated herself as a font of knowledge for junior paramedics and can be frequently seen holding impromptu clinical training sessions to support and empower emerging paramedics to aim for the highest standards of practice. 

Rachel, Head of Communications

Rachel has worked at Wellington Free Ambulance since 2021 where she’s recognised as a valued and respected leader. She brings her wealth of knowledge and expertise to ensure Wellington Free’s legacy of free ambulance care remains in the hearts and minds of our communities, patients, people and stakeholders. From leading Wellington Free’s biggest annual fundraising event that consistently exceeds fundraising targets to playing a key role in supporting innovative projects, Rachel consistently lifts others up through her contributions.

Aksha, ICT Operations Manager

Aksha leads a highly effective ICT team with a significant breadth of work that’s critical to enabling Wellington Free Ambulance’s frontline, and the organisation, to deliver on its mission. She expertly delivers in the face of regularly shifting priorities, remaining calm and focused while working across core work, projects and strategic initiatives. Aksha’s focus on exceptional customer support and continuous improvement; completing projects successfully; and her determination to achieve the team’s and organisation’s goals is both infectious and inspiring.

Wendy, Patient Transfer Officer/Relief Team Leader

Wendy is a highly respected leader within Wellington Free Ambulance’s Patient Transfer Services, recognised for bringing people together, advocating for others, and driving meaningful improvement in service delivery. Wendy’s integrity is one of her most defining attributes and she consistently embodies Wellington Free Ambulance’s values. Her leadership has a direct, positive impact on workplace culture, staff experience, and patient care. Wendy is a leader who lifts others and makes Wellington Free Ambulance a better place to work and serve.

Vanessa, Intensive Care Paramedic

Vanessa has eight years of service with Wellington Free Ambulance, beginning her career as an event medic and qualifying as an intensive care paramedic in 2025. She’s also a preceptor, assessor and member of the Rescue Squad. She leads in demanding clinical environments by exemplifying what it means to be an ICP, demonstrating clinical excellence and empathy. Vanessa is a role model within the service, encompassing all of Wellington Free Ambulance’s values while elevating those around her.

Your leadership, compassion and commitment to serving our communities embody the very best of Wellington Free Ambulance. Your mahi makes a difference every single day on the road, in our communities and within our teams.
